With the explosive growth of the Internet, Quality of Service (QoS) Monitoring for end-to-end delay (latency), latency variation (jitter), and undetected packet loss become important issues. For example, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services are becoming increasingly popular. The affects of latency and jitter in these phone systems limit quality of service and degrade voice quality. On the other hand, the increased network traffic plays a major contribution in packet loss and consequently the loss of mission critical data such as customer information. The QoS Monitoring System provides the tools to analyze the actual packets on the network and calculates the jitter and delay time. Compared with conventional methods, this system does not generate test packets for analysis. This allows the QoS Monitoring System to measure the latency of the network which compensates the QoS with a Diffserv or MPLS accurately. The system also allows for the measurement of packet loss which is important for mission critical applications.
